In a recent exclusive interview, we had the privilege of speaking with Honogumo, the drummer and composer of the emerging band Kuon. Known for their unique sound and emotionally resonant lyrics, Kuon has been steadily gaining attention in the music industry. Honogumo‘s insights offer a deeper understanding of the band’s journey, creative process, and aspirations.

Section 1: Childhood and Career Beginnings

  1. Can you tell us about your childhood? When did you start taking an interest in music?

It was during middle school. There was a very sad event at the time, and I started music because I wanted to immerse myself in something.

  1. What was the biggest challenge you faced when you started your music career?

Finding a place to practice the drums. At the time, the only thing I had in music was the drums, so practicing was very difficult. After I started composing songs, the biggest challenge was writing lyrics. Memories from that time would come flooding back, and I struggled to find a place for my emotions.

  1. Do you remember a specific moment or event that made you decide to pursue music professionally?

I received an opportunity that was beyond my means, and since then, I became more conscious about it. It was a mix of happiness and anxiety.

Section 2: Musical Style and Influences

  1. How would you describe your music style to someone who hasn’t heard it yet?

I would describe it as “singing the underside,” focusing on daily struggles and anxieties, creating music that quietly stands by your side. I often say it’s about dark things.

  1. Can you tell us about your process for creating new songs?

I often get inspiration from life, literature, anime, and movies. It starts with thoughts like, “Why do I feel this way about this?” or “What if I were a character in this story?” which lead to a concept for the song.

  1. Besides music, are there other influences (literature, art, experiences, etc.) that have significantly impacted your music?

As mentioned earlier, literature, anime, and movies. Additionally, conversations and the misfortunes of people close to me.

Section 3: Career Highlights and Achievements

  1. What is the most memorable moment in your career so far?

The first one-man live concert. It was the moment when everything we had done so far was acknowledged. It was like a proof of our existence and a validation. I was really happy because I had been anxious all along.

  1. Which of your songs are you most proud of and why?

The new song “Sono Gunjo wa Uso janai” (That Ultramarine is Not a Lie). I feel like I was able to express my recent self completely. It’s a very good song, so please listen to it.

  1. How do you measure success in your music career? What is important, such as awards, fan feedback, etc.?

Having many people listen to our music, “Kuon,” in its true form, and continuing that literally “eternally.” Along the way, performing on big stages and appearing in media we want to participate in. Achieving results that we are satisfied with would bring us immense happiness.

Section 4: Challenges and Growth

  1. What has been the biggest obstacle you have overcome in your career, and how did you overcome it?

Quick reflexes. At the time, we were trying to manage everything with just the two of us, so the lack of quick reflexes was a concern. We overcame it by adding new members and relying on various people. We are truly grateful.

  1. How do you maintain motivation and inspiration during particularly difficult times?

By continuing to create. I haven’t found any other way to escape feelings of anxiety and loss except by continuing to fight. I’m really bad at taking breaks, so I’d love some advice on that.

  1. Can you tell us about a moment when you felt a significant personal or professional growth?

I haven’t felt it yet. It’s probably not a good thing, but I’ll keep working hard.

Section 5: Future Plans and Goals

  1. What are your goals for the next few years in your music career?

I want to perform a lot of live shows. I believe that live performances are a way to validate our songs, and I want to pursue this expression more and show it to people. Of course, I want to continue creating good songs.

  1. Can you tell us about any upcoming projects or collaborations?

There are many things I can’t talk about yet, but we are planning to take “band-like actions” next year. There are no collaborations planned.

  1. How do you envision the evolution of your music in the future? Are you planning to explore new directions?

It depends on my situation at the time, but I don’t have any specific plans to explore new directions. The best outcome would be to create music that reflects us at that moment. I always want to be conscious of constantly updating our musical evolution.

Section 6: Special/Unique/Original Questions

  1. If you could duet with any artist, who would you like to perform with and why?

No one in particular. I’m sorry.

  1. What is a surprising fact about you that would surprise your fans?

I can throw a paper airplane farther than anyone. It flies farther than anyone else’s.
