NUL. Unveils Third Album AVA, Marking a Shift in Musical Direction

Tokyo-based industrial rock band NUL. releases AVA, their third album, emphasizing rock and metal themes over their prior industrial influences. With a focus on powerful, aggressive sounds, AVA represents a shift in the band’s evolving style.

Tokyo’s industrial rock band NUL. has introduced their third full-length album, AVA, showcasing a deliberate shift in their sound. Known for blending rock, metal, and industrial elements, NUL. has chosen to downplay their industrial roots in AVA, instead focusing on more direct rock and metal themes. Released digitally on October 17, 2024, and on CD on October 25, this album reflects both the band’s stylistic growth and their commitment to refining their core sound.

The title AVA—drawn from “avalanche”—speaks to the album’s focus on themes of aggression and controlled chaos, with occasional softer interludes that bring unexpected balance. The title’s palindrome structure also reflects NUL.‘s three-member lineup, bringing a symmetrical feel to the album. Lead vocalist HIZUMI explains that AVA is part of the band’s journey to develop their sound further while still honoring the intense style that fans have come to recognize.

The album was created in collaboration with guitarist MASATO and programmer Toshiyuki Kishi, whose contributions add a distinct rhythmic foundation and programmed layers that bring depth to the music. With guest drummers and bassist tmsw joining the recording, AVA spans a range of tones, from the forceful tracks “CRUMBLE” and “HYBRID BEAST” to the resonant final piece, “THE LAST DAY.”

Released at the conclusion of their national MADARA tour, AVA will be showcased again at NUL.’s record release event in Tokyo on November 14, 2024. This album illustrates NUL.’s exploration of new musical ground while retaining the energy and intensity at the core of their work.
