Legendary Japanese rock band GLAY has released their much-anticipated single “whodunit,” featuring JAY from the globally acclaimed K-pop group ENHYPEN. This exciting release is a significant part of GLAY’s 30th-anniversary celebrations, showcasing the band’s commitment to evolving their sound and embracing new creative challenges.
GLAY members TERU and TAKURO traveled to South Korea for the recording sessions, working directly with JAY to ensure a seamless collaboration. Demonstrating his multifaceted talent, JAY not only performed but also wrote the lyrics for his part in the song. The synergy between the artists is palpable, culminating in a track that bridges the gap between J-rock and K-pop.
The music video for “whodunit,” now available on YouTube, is a visual feast. Filmed entirely in South Korea, it features a dramatic face-off between vocalists TERU and JAY. Directed by Bae Myung-Hyun, the video includes stunning CG scenes inspired by the 30th-anniversary key visuals created by Eiichiro Oda, the esteemed creator of “ONE PIECE.” This visual element adds a layer of depth and excitement, paying homage to GLAY‘s rich history and artistic vision.
Formed in Hakodate in 1988, GLAY has been a trailblazer in the Japanese Visual Kei movement since their major debut with the single “RAIN” in 1994. Over the years, the band has achieved numerous milestones, including a US tour in 2008 for their 20th anniversary and their first concert in South Korea in 2019 to celebrate their 25th anniversary.
The single “whodunit” is more than just a song; it is a testament to GLAY’s enduring influence and their ability to innovate while honoring their roots. The collaboration with JAY signifies a new chapter for the band, blending their iconic sound with contemporary K-pop influences to create something truly unique.
TAKURO of GLAY expressed his gratitude for the collaboration, highlighting the significance of working with JAY and the creative contributions from Eiichiro Oda. He emphasized the remarkable performances captured in the video, particularly the intense interactions between TERU and JAY, which he believes will be remembered as one of GLAY‘s greatest moments.
Director Bae Myung-Hyun also shared his admiration for GLAY, praising their dedication and passion throughout the filming process. He noted the impressive dynamic between the seasoned rock band and the young K-pop star, creating a harmonious and powerful performance that resonated with everyone involved.
