Japanese rock band the pillows have officially disbanded, as announced on February 1. Their final performance took place on January 31 at KT Zepp Yokohama, marking the end of a remarkable 35-year journey.
In a statement on their official website, the band expressed deep gratitude to their fans, saying, “Thanks to you all, we had a happy 35 years.” They explained that while they hesitated to use the strong word “disbandment,” they wanted to avoid creating false hopes of a reunion. The members also mentioned that they hope to reconnect with fans through their individual projects in the future.
Formed in 1989, the pillows debuted in 1991 with the single Ame ni Utaeba. Over the decades, they developed a unique alternative rock sound that resonated with fans in Japan and beyond. Songs like Funny Bunny and Ride on Shooting Star became anthems, with the latter gaining international recognition through its association with the anime FLCL.
While the band was set to celebrate their 35th anniversary in September 2024, they made the decision to part ways beforehand. Despite their disbandment, the pillows’ legacy and music will continue to inspire fans worldwide.
